Kosher meat preparation
The Yisrael Beiteinu party made a sensational claim: They said that the average salary of a skilled surgeon is about NIS 34,000 ($10,500) while the average salary of a shochet is NIS 100,000 ($30,000).
We went out to investigate. How much does a shochet actually earn? "People who consider themselves suited to the job of shechita can reach a significant wage," says one of the people involved in this area. The salary varies with the location of the slaughter, the kashrus network behind it, the scope of the job and the weekly hours involved. Experience also counts for a lot." Then, again, there are differences in the actual type of shechita, like that of cattle or poultry.
Yisrael Beiteinu presented a sum of 100,000 shekel a month. Indeed?
"Shechita is more remunerative than other professions and can reach 12,000 shekel ($3,000) a month. The work is not pleasant or easy but to those who take to it, this job becomes part of them. They acquire experience and tenure, with salary rising accordingly.
"The base salary of a poultry shochet can reach a sum of a monthly 10,000 shekel on the basis of 150 -160 hours a month and applies to a novice shochet as well." If you make the calculation, you will easily conclude that these figures are a far cry from what was publicized.
