HaRav Chaim Walkin shlita on the right and his father HaRav Shmuel Dovid zt"l
"The whole great miracle of hatzoloh began because they collected tzedokoh from door to door as the Magen Avrohom writes at the beginning of Hilchos Chanukah (670): `Young boys have the custom to go around to the doors on Chanukah.'
"Then young Solly Ganor gave all his money to tzedokoh, and was left with nothing, and that initiated his relationship with the Consul who had come to the candy store. They met and Solly invited him to his home. In the Ganor home he first heard about war refugees, which eventually brought him to work to save thousands of Jews."
HaRav Walkin said that he met Ganor two years ago. "We should know that the great miracle of the salvation of the Torah world in Shanghai is a Heavenly act that has no natural explanation. In the sefer Mizrach Shemesh that includes the sichos of the Mashgiach zt"l in Shanghai, it brings what he said on Purim 5741. `We have had many more miracles in Shanghai than there are in Megillas Esther.'
Mir Talmidim in Shanghai
"One of the survivors of Shanghai was HaRav Herschel Milner zt"l. He once asked the Mashgiach Reb Chatzkel about the amazing coincidences that happened time after time. Every time Maran Hamaschgiach instructs the bochurim to leave the place they are staying in the ghetto and to move to another place, suddenly after only a few hours, enemy planes come and bomb the place that the bochurim had been. This happened over and over again. R' Herschel asked the Mashgiach if he had ruach hakodesh to help him save the yeshiva students.
"Reb Chatzkel said chas vecholiloh to suspect that he has ruach hakodesh. So what happens? Every night his rabbonim from Kelm come to him in dreams and tell him what to do and how to conduct himself. I heard this from that talmid who had asked the Mashgiach.
"So we see that this whole miracle was Heavenly Providence to save the Torah world.
"When we look at the entire chain of events, starting with the construction of the Trans-Siberian railroad from Moscow to Vladivostok, where thousands of laborers built a railroad that had no rational justification to be built, and especially in view of the fact that right after the last train brought the bnei Torah to their destination the German blew up the tracks — it is impossible not to see the miracles.
"All these great miracles show us clearly how Hakodosh Boruch Hu watched over us to preserve and continue the Torah world. After I came to Eretz Yisroel to learn in Mir Yeshiva, the rosh yeshiva HaRav Chaim Shmuelevitz zt"l told me that the best shiurim he said in his life were in the Shanghai exile. We cannot imagine the awful conditions there, the heat, the diseases the infections, subhuman living conditions there. And nonetheless the Kol Torah did not stop.
A press report of HaRav Chaim Walkin's visit to China
"I once met one of the great talmidei chachomim who had been in Shanghai, HaRav Mordechai Yehuda Lubart who said to me, `In Shanghai there was a shtarkera matzav fon Torah.
"From all this we see the promise of HaKodosh Boruch Hu: It will not be forgotten from his descendants, being fully fulfilled. The Torah world was saved and the great talmidei chachomim from Shanghai erased the spiritual desolation of those days in America and Eretz Yisroel. From them Torah had a future. Al Nisecho ve'al Nifle'osecho ve'al Yeshu'oshecho.
