For Every Jew Buried in Paris, the Bones of Another Jew are Dug Up

By Yechiel Sever

Paris catacombs contain millions of bones

Rabbonim and public figures expressed their sharp protest, which included a call to world Jewry to take swift and powerful action against the dangerous phenomenon taking place in France where departed Jews are exhumed and in many cases, their bones cremated.

"According to our information, each day three bodies are dug up from their graves, which adds up to a yearly figure of a thousand cremations. This is a genuine catastrophe! We must raid a hue and cry of protest throughout the entire world," said HaRav Nosson Kahn, editor of the French publication, Kuntras.

The Paris comptroller announced recently that all the cemeteries throughout Paris are filled, which means that every deceased Jew who wants to be buried in Paris necessitates for another already deceased one to be dug up and transferred to city vaults.

Up till lately, it was known that the municipality is vacating Jewish graves and transferring the bodies to their vaults but when the issue was investigated by askonim who asked to check those vaults, they were told that some remains had been cremated. An official document reached the hands of the askonim when one of the relatives of a deceased asked permission to pray by the coffin-side in the vaults, only to learn that the remains had been incinerated. That relative was referred to the place where the ashes were spread! A further investigation shows that the municipality has been doing this for some time due to lack of room in the vaults, without public awareness.

In Paris there are some 200 kilometers of underground tunnels, and the remains of many exhumed bodies are dumped there. All dumped together: Jews and non-Jews. By Torah standards this is a serious bizoyon hameis.
