People Outside Eretz Yisroel Must Support Residents of Eretz Yisroel

by HaRav Moshe Shternbuch

The following is a translation of one of the Torah messages that appeared on the parsha sheet of HaRav Moshe Shternbuch for the week of parshas Mattos in Eretz Yisroel.

With regard to the request of the tribes of Reuven and Gad to receive their inheritance on the east bank of the Jordan river it is explained in the parsha that the tribes of Gad and Reuven at first wished to remain on the east bank of the Jordan to enjoy the bounty that was there and that they did not at first agree to fight in Eretz Yisroel to conquer the land. To this Moshe Rabbeinu responded, "Here, you have sinned to Hashem... Should your brothers go out to war and you will stay here?"

These things are relevant to us in our times. The sinners come in Eretz Yisroel to the Holy Palace with chilul Shabbos, arayos and more. We must protest to ensure that Heavenly wrath is not directed at us. Those living on chutz la'aretz must stand at our side, and help us to increase the kedushah in Eretz Yisroel and to prevent the sinners from defiling the Land. If there is someone who prefers to just enjoy the bounty of Olom Hazeh and does not come to help us in these battles, he is subject to the accusation of Moshe Rabbenu: "Should your brothers go out to war and you will stay here?"

Know that the struggles in Eretz Yisroel against the heretics is the war of Hashem against Amolek. The Kabbalists have written that in the period preceding the coming of Moshiach, the leaders of the government in Eretz Yisroel will be from the root of Amolek.

We must fight against them on two fronts. One is by learning Torah, since we thereby overcome the tumah of Amolek. The other is by publicly protesting against them.

In both these aspects of the war the residents of chutz la'aretz must help us. This means by learning and supporting the kollels and yeshivas of Eretz Yisroel, and also by protesting all over the world against the leadership in Eretz Yisroel that tries to prevent us from living fully as Jews.

The residents of chutz la'aretz should not think that the struggle with Amolek has nothing to do with them personally. Chazal said, "If the mistress as attacked, the maidservant will surely suffer." So that if, chas vesholom, there is Heavenly anger against the community in Eretz Yisroel, it will have repercussions for the community in chutz la'aretz as well, Rachmono litzlan.
