Alleviating the Shidduch Crisis — in the USA and in Israel

by Dei'ah Vedibur Staff and Y. Shain

We all have heard of the "Shidduch Crisis." Is there a solution? No one knows, but efforts are being made in the USA and in Israel to do something.

Sunday, June 2nd, the American Agudah is taking steps to help people "in the parshah," their parents, shadchanim, and shidduch coaches.

The inaugural Compass: Navigating the Shidduch World event, to be held at the Young Israel of Midwood in Brooklyn, will present suggestions that could help with problems in the structure of the shidduch process. Compass is an Agudah project.

The event will begin at 10:45 am and will feature Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein of Ohr Naava, authors and shidduch coaches Rabbi Daniel Frank and R' Shaya Ostrov, Mrs. Baila Yaniv of the Partners in Shidduchim Project, and Shia Markowitz, CEO of Agudas Yisroel. Mordy Mehlman, publisher of the Flatbush Jewish Journal, will be master of ceremonies for the event. There will also be a question and answer session following the program.

Separately, in Israel there is a heightened interest throughout all strata of the population regarding the upcoming founding assembly regarding revamping the process of shidduchim and easing the difficulties of marriage matters which will take place as a result of the call from our Torah leadership, headed by HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, HaRav Gershon Eidelstein and HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch who are at the helm of the new organization. The gathering will take place on Rosh Chodesh Sivan (June 4).

A broad spectrum of awareness was registered among the different bodies invited to this founding assembly. Dozens of roshei yeshiva have added their signature to the special letter calling upon the public to support and reinforce this vital initiative.

The letter states: "We come hereby to strengthen the hands of the eminent rabbonim and public activists under their guidance, who are toiling as the representatives under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, and who have already received the support of our Torah leaders."

Over fifty representatives from different yeshivos have already been appointed who will constitute a part of the large alignment, alongside the hundreds of matchmakers throughout the country and the heads of seminaries.
