Terrorist Prisoners Do Whatever Damage They Can

By Y Schwartz and G Lazar

"The fact that high security prisoners consume 50 percent more water is intolerable and we must not allow such waste," said Gilad Erdan, the Israeli Minister of Internal Security. "I have ordered the Prisons Services to urgently determine other ways to bring about conservation of water in those wings where terrorists are housed including limiting the hours in which they may take showers and also limiting the length of the showers."

A recent report highlighted the extreme wastage of water by imprisoned terrorists. According to the report, the average terrorists uses the enormous amount of 248.4 cubic meters of water a year, compared to the average among all Israeli citizens of only 70 cubic meters a year. The terrorists used more than three and a half times as much water as the average citizen, and the entire amount of wasted water comes to almost 750,000 cubic meters. Since the cost to the prison system is about NIS 7.5 per cubic meter, the value of the water is about NIS 5 million.

This is not the first time the phenomenon has been brought to public attention. About ten years ago attention was also drawn to the problem. The Prison Service told the media that it is working to try to control the wastage. The high security prisoners have toilets and showers that are not shared by the general prison population, which makes it harder to supervise their use.
