One Must Always Learn at Peak Effort Even Difficult Material

By Y. Shain

On Monday morning 6 Shvat, HaRav Dov Lando came to participate in a siyum on Maseches Eruvin which was studied intensively for three years in the Nachalas Eish kollel under the leadership of HaRav Daniel Reiven and HaRav Asher Weidman. In his address, he strengthened the avreichim in their obligation to study through much labor despite the difficulty in comprehending sections of this tractate. In the course of his visit he also went to the Shaarei Daas cheder affiliated with the Shaarei Tvuna community in Ramot Alef, he was ardently welcomed by the thousand students with a rousing rendition of "Ki orech yomim ushnos chaim..."

In his message to the young students, he quoted the mishna: "'The world exists because of Torah, avoda and gemilus chassodim.' `Torah' refers to the study thereof, while `avoda' refers to the sacrifices which were brought when the Beis Hamikdash still stood. Today we no longer have the Beis Hamikdash, due to our many sins, but in its stead, we have prayer. We must pray to Hashem with conviction and concentration, asking Him for what we lack and thanking Him for what we have. `Gemilus chassodim' refers to living in harmony with our fellows and seeking that they have it good. We must feel brotherhood towards them for thus will we succeed and be happy while providing nachas to our parents and our melamdim."

As he was leaving the neighborhood, the students, headed by HaRav Gavriel Kossover, awaited him so as to receive his blessing.
