Activities of Mishmeres HaShabbos Prevent Chilul Shabbos

By Yechiel Sever

The rabbonim of Mishmeres HaShabbos met with HaRav Yitzchok Zilberstein for a periodic review of the organization's activities and the newest developments of its innovations department regarding the solutions for primary usage of various electrical appliances and devices operated by digital sensors. Among other things, the rabbonim displayed a unique device developed for hotel doors which are operated by a digital card, allowing for their opening and locking without the use of electricity. They also presented the solutions developed for pressure water pumps in high rise buildings and sewage pumps below ground levels operated by smart digital setups.

HaRav Zilberstein, who closely supervises the activities of Mishmeres HaShabbos, expressed great satisfaction at their many branched research efforts for a wide range of products and their developed solutions, noting that their activities save thousands of Jews from Shabbos desecration.

He asked the said rabbonim to publicize a true account which took place with the Beis HaLevi who was once visited in his home on Friday night by a Jew who said that his daughter was in the throes of a difficult childbirth, with actual danger to the lives of mother and child. The Beis HaLevi told him to make Kiddush and eat his meal as usual, as his guest. The visitor wailed bitterly, saying that he was incapable of eating in this present situation but the Rav insisted that he, indeed, make Kiddush and eat the Shabbos meal there in his home. He did so and afterwards, the Beis HaLevi told him that he would pray for him. "Go home and I promise that your daughter will be blessed with a great yeshua."

The distressed Jew duly returned later to inform the Rav joyfully that his daughter had given birth and that both mother and child were well, insisting that this was a wonder work of the Beis HaLevi. The latter dismissed the statement with a wave of his hand, quoting the verse, "And you shall revel on Hashem and [He] will grant you the wishes of your heart."

HaRav Zilberstein added, "Whoever honors the Sabbath and is scrupulous in the usage of kosher electrical appliances on Shabbos is all the more so [kal vochomer] guaranteed that when he prays, he will enjoy the fulfillment of all of his heart's desires."

He further stressed that in addition to the halachic prohibition involved in using devices with digital sensors, as a community we are also in danger of destroying the very makeup of his Shabbos. If we are not meticulous regarding the prohibition of using digitally operated electrical devices, we might eventually reach a situation of operating factories on Shabbos, G-d forbid.
