HaRav Shteinman shlita: Do Not Cooperate with the Ministry of Education

By Yechiel Sever

"Out of apprehension for the future of pure chinuch, one must not cooperate, under any circumstances, with the supervisors of the Education Ministry."

In an emphatic directive from the Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, to the entire body of principals of Torah educational institutions without exception, it is absolutely forbidden to comply with the demands of the Education Ministry supervisors in any educational subject whatsoever. This is in light of their blatant, unprecedented, indefatigable and persistent intervention in matters of chinuch, both in the curriculum vis-a-vis spiritual matters as well as with matters of required supplementary courses being required by the Ministry.

A letter to all the principals of chinuch institutions published this Tuesday in Yated Ne'eman, signed by the rabbonim: Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Rosh Yeshivas Slobodka and member of Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah and Yigal Rosen, Rosh Yeshivas Ohr Yisrael, states:

"Numerous testimonies have been brought before HaRav Shteinman regarding the interference of the Ministry of Education, both in the area of administration and by the supervisors regarding the curricula of the educational institutions of the chareidi public, and their unyielding demand to have teachers take refresher courses offered by them, many of which are replete with apikorsus etc.

"Out of serious concern for the future of our pure, unadulterated chinuch and a definite fear against blemishing the untainted souls of our young flock, the Rosh Yeshiva has requested from us, in the presence of the devoted communal activist, MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni, to emphatically affirm in his name to all of the principals of chareidi institutions, teachers and kindergarten teachers, without exception, not to cooperate in any form or manner with the supervisors of the Education Ministry (including chareidi supervisors) in any educational subject whatsoever, except for purely technical requirements for renewing official licenses, even if this act suspends or delays the reissuing of such government license. The educational staff is also forbidden to join any framework of supplementary courses offered by the Ministry."

The letter of the Torah leadership concludes:

"We are obligated to stand up for our rights and our lives in view of this dastardly decree, and if we form a solid wall, Hashem, in His infinite mercy, will have compassion on us and will remove this threat, and we will merit the promise in Shir HaShirim, `I am a wall... and then was I in His eyes as one who finds favor/peace.' And in the words of the Psikta, Hashem will refer to us as `peace', as is written, `Behold, I will bend unto you like a river of peace."
