After a Long Struggle, a School Building in Beit Shemesh goes to Bais Yaakov

The Education Ministry approved moving the Languages and Cultures school out of the large building its 144 students occupy in favor of the Bais Yaakov Mishkenos Yaakov school with over 900 students. The Languages and Cultures school will be merged with another existing school.

The Votes of Kiddush Hashem

The chareidi community showed it willingness to be counted for the cause of Torah and Yahadus in the recent elections, as support for United Torah Judaism (UTJ) broadened throughout the country. From any way we analyze the results of the elections, the most prominent fact is the clear response to the call of maranan verabonon Gedolei Yisroel shlita to be mekadesh Hashem by voting for the principles that underlie Torah Judaism. As Maran Rosh Hayeshiva HaRav Shteinman shlita said, "In these elections there is no third way. It is either Kiddush Hashem or chas vesholom chilul Hashem."

French Rabbonim Against the Internet

More than 70 roshei yeshivas, rabbonim, morei horo'oh and communal leaders in France participated in a special rabbinical conference to fight the damages of modern technology, arranged by the Tag organization of Paris which is very active in this area. The kenes was held in the Ohalei Yaakov shul.

A Compilation of Anecdotes and Pearls for the Seder Night

The Sea Saw it and Fled

The seforim cite an amazing Midrash: "What did [the sea] see? It saw the beraissa of R' Yishmo'el." There are many pilpulim somehow to explain that apparently incomprehensible Midrash. When HaRav Isser Zalman Meltzer zt'l, the author of the Even Ha'Ozel and the rosh yeshiva of Slutsk, was asked about the Midrash he answered that it is based on an explicit Gemora in Sanhedrin (73a)...

HaGaon Rabbi Refoel Shapira, zt"l Rosh Yeshivas Volozhin

In honor of his yahrtzeit, 23 Adar 5681

The rising sun and brightening sky exuded a warm calm air over Volozhin. But the morning's tranquility was only a delusion, belying what was to come.

A loud whooshing sound, followed by a deafening bang, broke the stillness all at once. Chaos reigned as all the townspeople alternated between running for shelter and swarming to the source of the sound to check it out.

The Vilna Gaon: A Man of Piety

by Rav Dov Eliach

In his three-volume work HaGaon (that was put together under the supervision of HaRav Chaim Kanievsky) Rav Dov Eliach brought together an enormous amount of material to try to give us some concept of what the Vilna Gaon was. The Gaon was outstanding in many aspects of human development. Our concepts do not do justice to what the Gaon really was. The section printed here is taken from Chapter Six, and is centered around the piety of the Gaon. When reading it, one should keep in mind that this is just one of many areas in which the Gaon lived at a such an outstanding level.

The Sefas Emes

by HaRav Refoel Berlson

Yahrtzeit: 5 Shvat, 5765

Kotsk 5616 (1856). The thief made his way toward the rebbe's house. Here perhaps he would find something worth stealing. He was unafraid to break into the home of the Seraph of Kotsk, zechuso yogen oleinu, whose whisper was the hiss of a snake. The thief spotted a silver goblet, stashed it in his sack and left. When the burglary was discovered one of the shamashim said, "Why should it come as a surprise if a theft takes place? Here everything is hefker!"

Doing Something

by M. Zonnefeld

FICTION

When rumors started that Shmuel Dovid, the son of Necha the cook, was about to leave home, all were surprised.

"Impossible," many said with raised eyebrows. "He's such a ben yochidel (`only child' with all that implies)."
