Beware of Water Meters that Violate Shabbos

By Yechiel Sever

Rabbonim and poskim warn against the installment of digital water meters for families by water companies under a `kosher' label. Outwardly, they don't look any different than the permissible ones but HaRav Chaim Kanievsky has ruled that "it is tantamount to eating chometz on Pesach, relying on the label declaring the product to be `Kosher lePesach'."

In a letter sent by the Chairman of Directors of Netanya Waterworks Inc., Amir Sinai, dated the 27th of Kislev, 5775, to HaRav Kanievsky, he asked: "As responsible for the installation of water meters in Netanya, I wish to inquire about the neighborhood water meters which, when one turns on the faucet, registers even the smallest amount of water used. It is being offered on the market as a Kosher-for-Shabbos meter on the grounds that on Shabbos one does not see the electric digital display on the meter itself. The window says instead: `Shabbos'. Can one rely on this bedi'eved?"

In his reply, Maran said: "It is like eating chometz on Pesach relying merely on the label that says `Kosher lePesach'."
