Annual Gathering of Yeshiva Ketanoh Educators

Hundreds of roshei yeshiva and ramim in yeshiva ketanos gathered on Monday for the annual kenes organized by the Committee of Roshei Yeshivos for Youth in Eretz Yisroel. They heard important addresses about coping with the times from the Rosh Hayeshiva Maran A. Shteinman as will as from HaRav Boruch Ezrachi and HaRav Michel Silver.

Address of the Rosh Yeshiva Shlita Maran HaRav Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman

Morai Verabosai! I cannot go on at length but I will just say a few things. Some think that with students one can do as he pleases, and therefore he allows himself to scream at them, to get angry with them, and the like. Sometimes this causes great lifelong damage because of embarrassing [a young student]. Therefore one must know that he is dealing with people's souls, and each and every one of them may turn out to be a talmid chochom who will influence the whole world with his Torah, and his yiras Shomayim and his good middos - and chas vesholom it could be the opposite.

100 Shmittah Cans Set up in Bnei Brak

This Shmittah year there is a big innovation in Bnei Brak. For the first time ever, anywhere, the city government set up a hundred Shmittah cans across the city, with plans to set up more. The project is the initiative of Mayor Chanoch Zeibart and his deputy Rabbi Menachem Shapira, head of the Sanitation Department of Bnei Brak.

HaRav Shmuel De Medina, zt"l, Rav of Salonika

In honor of his yahrtzeit, 3 Cheshvan (5350)

Of the dark periods in our history, that of the Spanish Inquisition and the subsequent expulsion from Spain remains one of the most dismal. Hardly was there ever another era when Jews had been raised so high in their golus home - spiritually, financially and socially - only to be plummeted into the depths of such intense persecution and suffering.

Understanding the Depths of Avodoh Zora

by Mordecai Plaut

Part II

The first part discussed the basic nature of the prohibition and how it is considered central in Torah. Whoever denies it is like agreeing to the entire Torah. The Torah warns against it a total of 44 times. If avodoh zora falls into some other substance, it prohibits the entire mixture, no matter how small a proportion the avodoh zora is. We must not think about it or learn about it. We should not even use its buildings as landmarks. One should not even look at avodoh zora.

The Immorality of Palestinian Combatants and Noncombatants

by Mordecai Plaut

After 11 days of often intense fighting in northern Gaza between Israeli military forces and Palestinian militants, an Israeli tank came under heavy fire one night at about 1 a.m. Israeli forces responded by shooting back at the apparent sources of the fire. Certainly those whose lives were at stake were fully alert, but visibility is certainly not the best at that time.
