Wife of American Ambassador to Israel was Among Original Women of the Wall

by Dei'ah Vedibur Staff

According to a report in Merkaz HaInyonim, the American Ambassador to Israel revealed in a recent interview with Israeli journalist Ben Caspi that his wife was among the original Women of the Wall in the late 80s when they studied at the Hebrew University. Mrs. Shapira told the interviewer that she did participate in some of the early activities and that she believes that the issue is important to the Jews of Israel and of the whole world.

Ambassador Shapira said that he had a Reform Jewish upbringing although now he most often attends a Conservative synagogue. Shapira spent several years in Israel as a student and is fluent in Hebrew.
