Decisions of the Atzeres

By Yechiel Sever

The decisions of the historic prayer rally were read aloud in a very emotional voice at the end of the Atzeres by Rabbi Yeshayohu Lieberman, as follows:

In the presence of the leaders and beacons of our generation and the myriads of Jews gathered here, heads and members of our people together, to pray, be aroused and make a Kiddush Hashem, we hereby declare a mass protest regarding the rebellion against the Kingship of Hashem and the edict of army service for yeshiva and kollel students, the intent of which is to eradicate the Torah R"l and to impose upon full- time Torah scholars criminal charges to the extent of putting them behind bars. Therefore does this rally publicly affirm:

1. This rally demands that the government desist from passing any law harming Torah students by forcing them to leave their studies under punishment of imprisonment which is tantamount to uprooting Torah from Jewry and constitutes an atrocious chillul Hashem.

2. This rally calls upon every student of yeshivos and kollelim to refuse to be mobilized in any form or manner, and not to submit to any enticements or punishment threat of any kind, and not to cooperate with various army programs of any kind.

3. This rally appeals to the government and its prime minister not to lead the public into an unnecessary conflict in matters involving the very lifeblood of chareidi Jewry, in any matter of Judaism and religion, which will certainly result in a disharmonious rift between the various sectors of the population.

4. This rally calls upon the government and its prime minister not to change any of the conventions and institutions operating until now, and to preserve the status quo established and prevalent since the founding of the State with regard to mobilization and/or any other religious issue, and not to impose new decrees upon the chareidi public and the Torah world to restrict their lives at every step.

5. This rally calls, in the name of across-the-board Torah leadership, in this awesome and magnificent event of Kiddush Hashem, upon the broad community of the Torah-true public, loyal to Hashem and His Torah, to be fortified, not to be afraid or anxious, [to internalize that] we have no resort but this, our Torah. Torah study and mitzvah observance in purity and sanctity are our fortress and bastion protecting the Jewish people in every place and settlement from trouble and tribulation. These shall surely stand us by in these difficult times facing the House of Israel, as they have in all of our exiles, and just as miracles were performed for our ancestors in the time of Purim, so shall we also merit salvation in this time.

Hashem, in His infinite mercy and kindness, will surely hear our outcry and receive our prayers with compassion and good will, and will hasten our geula and extract us from oppression to liberty and from darkness to a great light with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, speedily and in our days, Amen!
