Major Conference Regarding Upcoming Shmittah

There is much anticipation of the upcoming conference on shmittah issues to be held this coming Motzei Shabbos parshas Beshalach, headed by our gedolei Yisrael and directed to the general chareidi public, highlighting the importance of shmittah observance and the study of the laws thereof. The purpose of this assembly is to arouse awareness and empower those to whom it applies directly - that is, the farmers - to observe the Sabbatical year according to strict Halochoh.

Urgent Meeting of Yemenite Roshei Yeshiva and Rabbonim

Dozens of Roshei Yeshiva and rabbonim from the Yemenite community gathered this week in Bnei Brak to voice an anguished protest against the imminent threat of drafting yeshiva students and chareidi persecution by the government in general. "We are obligated to regard this period as a real war, and to protest vehemently and rend the gates of Heaven, to pray every day that this decree be abolished," the rabbonim declared in great pain.

HaRav Ephraim Greenblatt zt"l
Rabbi of Memphis, Tennessee and Author of Rivevos Ephraim Responsa

A huge crowd of mourners, headed by gedolei Torah and many hundreds of Jerusalemites and people from abroad, escorted HaRav Ephraim Greenblatt to his final resting place this past Friday, Parshas Bo, 2 Shvat. Rav Greenblatt, the rav of Memphis, Tennessee, was immersed in Torah and Halacha throughout his life and was a favored disciple of HaRav Moshe Feinstein, who entrusted him with disseminating Torah through the U.S. He was, in fact, one of the forerunners of the Teshuva Movement dating back many dozens of years. He toiled to bring the word of Hashem to remote cities in the U.S., while also authoring eight volumes of responsa, Rivevos Ephraim, which include thousands of illuminating letters in all areas of Halacha, as well as other volumes of Rivevos Ephraim on the Torah. In his later years, he moved to Eretz Yisrael and disseminated Torah in the Har Nof neighborhood. He passed away in the eighty-second year of his life and was buried shortly before Shabbos in the Har Hamenuchos cemetery.

HaRav Shmuel of Slonim, zt"l
In Honor of His Yahrtzeit, 19 Shevat 5673

After the passing of the Yesod Ho'avodah, the old Rebbe of Slonim, many chassidim automatically turned to one of his grandsons as their next leader. However, the distinguished among them were drawn to follow a new branch completely and crowned Rabbi Shmuel of Slonim as their Rebbe.

A Yeshiva Graduate is an Educated Adult

by Mordecai Plaut

Recently police charged that a total of 5,500 government employees, including 350 teachers, are suspected of having received fictitious academic degrees from the Israeli branch of the British University of Humberside. The revelations came only a day after police said that dozens of teachers, principals, psychologists, administrators and social workers from the north of the country are suspected of having knowingly purchased forged master's and doctoral degrees from the Ion Creanga Pedagogical University in Moldova. According to the police, the Moldova university denies it ever had any Israeli students.
