Chareidi Educational Institutions will not be Funded Unless They teach the Core Curriculum

The new Education Minister, Rabbi Shai Piron from the Yesh Atid party, declared, "Chareidi institutions will not receive government monies unless they incorporate the Liba Core Curriculum." In other words, chadorim which do not teach mathematics, English and Civic studies would not receive any government funding. "The chareidim will come to understand that we will not underwrite [a curriculum] which is against our interests. Institutions which teach the Core program will receive a full 100% coverage and those who do not will suffer." Rabbi Piron is the head of a high school yeshiva in Petach Tikva and one of the founders of the Zohar movement.

British Jews Have Religious Rights at Work

Following a series of European court rulings on human rights in Strassburg focusing specifically on religious workers which resulted in confusion, the Committee for Equal Rights in Great Britain has publicized a document with guidelines for employers regarding the rights of their various employees, among them Jews.

"The Jewish people both in Israel and the diaspora express disgust over the recent demands and provocations in attempting to strike a blow to the sanctity of the Kosel. I will fight with my whole body and soul to prevent any change in the status of the holiness of the Kosel and other holy sites," declared Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, rov of religious sites, as a reaction to the recent illegal provocation and incitement taking place at the area of the Kosel by a group calling themselves "The Women of the Wall."

The Agudath Israel Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah Grapples With Interference with Chareidi Chinuch

The Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah met on Sunday to discuss ways of preventing government intrusion with chareidi education. The comprehensive discussion dealt with a list of ways of fortifying chareidi independence in chinuch which follows the solid time-worn path of Torah.

Shortly before Shabbos last week, Friday 2 Iyar, 5773, a huge crowd of mourners accompanied to its final resting place the bier of HaRav Yaakov Yosef, Rosh Yeshivat Chazon Yaakov, rav of the Givat Moshe neighborhood and son of HaRav Ovadia Yosef, Nosi of the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah. He returned his soul to his Maker after an illness, at the age of sixty-eight.
