Admor of Vishnitz zt"l

The Admor of Vishnitz zt"l, president of Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisroel, who led Vishnitz chassidus for four decades, passed away late Tuesday night, on 20 Adar, at the age of 95. He was one of the great Chassidic leaders of all Klal Yisroel.


Knesset Delegation Lobbies European Parliaments about Shechita

An official Knesset delegation traveled to Europe this week to lobby various parliaments on the issue of shechita, which became more acute following French President Nikolas Sarkozi's announcement that shechita arrangements should be altered because of cruelty to animals.


Thousands of Safrus Products were Printed and Sold as Kosher

Lishkas Hakodesh, a public watchdog Stam (the Hebrew acronym of Sifrei Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzas) organization, has uncovered a massive fraud on the part of the well-known sofer Shimon Cohen. Cohen writes with truly beautiful letters, and it was known that he had made a computer font based on his handwriting. In the course of a din Torah in Jerusalem, it was discovered that the font had been used to print entire safrus products that were then overwritten in regular sofer ink. The products were sold to unsuspecting customers all over the world.


Amendment to Women's Draft Law Passes — Gafni Lambastes Likud

By a majority vote of 21 coalition and opposition supporters against five MKs from United Torah Judaism and Shas, the Knesset plenum passed in second and third readings early this week an amendment to the Women's Draft Law. MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni complained bitterly about the Likud's anti-chareidi behavior in this and other instances.

Steering Forum to Promote Chareidi Settlement in Northern Israel

At the behest of gedolei Yisroel shlita, a joint steering forum has been set up to assist in the formation of new Torah communities in Northern Israel and to promote chareidi settlement in northern cities. The initiative was intended to ameliorate the community's housing situation across the country by building chareidi residential areas in the North, which is considered the only realistically viable option.


Rain and Kinneret Watch

As of March 15 (21 Adar) 610 millimeters of rain had fallen in the Jerusalem area during the current season (August 1 to date). All the additional precipitation this week fell in the last day. This represents 129% of the average rainfall for this period and 114% of the average rainfall for the entire season in the Jerusalem area which is 537 mm.
