Torah Learning on Shabbos Night

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

We are very pleased to share with the public a regulation/commitment the bnei Torah of Elad and other residents, that has led to a big boost of thousands of hours of Torah study on Shabbos night.

One year ago HaRav Yosef Yitzchok Rotenberg, a prominent avreich in the city, passed away unexpectedly, sending shock waves throughout the city. HaRav Boruch Mordechai Ettinger, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Knesses Yechezkel, and HaRav Avrohom Moshe Pachter, ram at Kollel Medrash Eliyohu, put forth a proposal to have avreichim learn for at least one hour on Shabbos Night in the beis medrash or the beis knesses.

Hundreds of avreichim signed a takonoh and the study session has been dubbed, "Yosef Daas." The head of the Avi Ezri Kollel in Elad, HaRav Meir Bir, distributed a letter that quotes HaRav Shach telling his student, HaRav Avrohom Tzvi Taub, during the Gulf War, "For Shabbos demands its honor. When Shabbos learning is lacking, i.e. is not up to the standards of the evening seder during the week, many hours go to waste."

HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv shlita and other leading rabbonim appended their signatures, some adding comments. The rabbonim signed on the letter include HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, HaRav Chaim Kanievsky and HaRav Shmuel Auerbach shlita, the moro d'asro of Elad, HaRav Shlomo Zalman Grossman, as well as HaRav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz, zt"l.
