Rabbi Moshe Gafni in the Knesset: "The objective is to turn the chareidi public and the yeshiva students into secularists"

By Eliezer Rauchberger

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni argued this past Monday in the Knesset plenum that were Ariel Sharon or Ehud Olmert standing at the helm of the government, any incendiary campaign against the chareidi public regarding yeshivas and the draft law would not arise, and surely not get as far as passing a law to this effect.

He noted that Sharon once stated in an argument with a Mafdal devotee: "No one should suspect that I don't know the significance of the army and its importance, but if there were no yeshivos, there would be no Jewish people."

Gafni further clarified that it was obvious that the ultimate intention is not to draft the chareidi public and the Torah students, but to transform them into secularists.
