France: The Jewish Community is Concerned over the Entry of Anti-Semitic Elements if Hollande Wins
By Arnon Jaffe, Paris
The predicted victory of the leftist candidate, Francois Hollande, in the upcoming French presidential elections, is serious cause for consternation in the Jewish community which fears that this will introduce elements hostile to Jewry. A week before the second round of the elections, the two sides, President Nicolas Sarkozy and Hollande, brand one another with labels such as `Communist' and `Nazi'. They are both aggressively contesting for the six million votes which Le Pen garnered.
Le Pen's front does not have a chance of getting into the government, but the extreme left and the Greens, anti-Zionist to anti-Semitic parties, have increased their clout after the first round through agreements with the Socialists who promise them government ministerial posts and representatives to the national House. Four Jewish representatives in Paris were kicked out already by the Socialist Party in order to make way for the four anti-Semitic Greens. Hollande's candidacy for president, Martin Ovre, is running a campaign among the Moslem community. Jean Luc Melanchon, head of the Extreme Left and Communist Front, is also prepared to enter the government. Hollande phoned him in person to invite him to a meeting after the second round to discuss which post he would receive. Jews are very wary of this alliance which will augment the power of the extremists. Melanchon led a campaign to get France to leave NATO and to recognize a Palestinian state without any prior concessions. In demonstrations, the leftists wave Palestinian and Hizbullah flags.
