Pain and Protest of Maranan Verabbonon Over Attempt to Legitimize Israeli Army Converts

Expressions of anguish continued this week in response to the attempt on the part of the Chief Rabbinate to legitimize thousands of non-Jews who converted while serving in the Israeli Army, even when it was clear that they had no intention of keeping the mitzvos.

The following was published on the front page of Yated Ne'eman, Hamodia and Hamevaser on 20 Shvat.

We find it difficult to find the words to convey how strongly opposed and pained we are at the breach in the walls of Kerem Beis Yisroel by "authorizing" conversions not in accordance with halacha, thereby bringing non-Jews into Kerem Beis Yisroel.


Conflicting Figures on Demography in Israel

Conflicting figures on demographics in the State of Israel were presented this week at the Knesset Immigration and Absorption Committee. While Prof. Arnon Sofer of Haifa University claimed the State of Israel will be predominantly religious-chareidi within 20 years, researchers Yaakov Faivelson and Yoram Ettinger presented graphs and tables showing reproductive rates are up among secular Jews.


Antisemitic Incidents Down Worldwide in 2010

The number of antisemitic incidents diminished around the world last year compared to 2009 — a record year due to Operation Cast Lead — according to the annual report by the Jewish Agency's Coordination Forum for Countering Antisemitism (CFCA), which was presented to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

HaRav Nochum Zev Dessler zt"l, head of the Orthodox educational institutions in Cleveland, Ohio and the son of HaRav Eliyohu Eliezer Dessler zt"l, the grandson of the Alter of Kelm and thus a descendent of the founder of the Mussar Movement, HaRav Yisroel Salanter zt"l, passed away on Sunday after 18 Shvat in his ninetieth year.
