General and Specific Letters Against Mishpachah Reissued with Chassidic Rabbonim

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Two weeks ago on 29 Nisan the Hebrew Yated Ne'eman published two letters. One was signed by rabbonim and roshei yeshiva that focused on criticism of the weekly Jewish magazine Mishpachah, and another that made a point of including Mishpachah within the context of general criticism of Hebrew weekly advertising newspapers, as well as radio and Internet sites. As an aside, it is worth noting that the subject radio and Internet is specifically directed against Hebrew sites. This does not mean that they think English sites are ok, but merely that they are beyond the scope of the letters.

This week on Tuesday those letters were reissued. The original letter of the roshei yeshiva included 15 signatories. The reissued letter includes 24 signatories. The new signers are generally Chassidic roshei yeshiva.

The other, more general letter was originally signed by HaRav Nissim Karelitz. The reissued letter in this case also includes the signatures of HaRav Chaim Kanievsky and HaRav Eliashiv.

Although some have said that HaRav Karelitz originally asked to postpone the publication of his letter (while others have denied that there was such a request), HaRav Karelitz has never protested the publication of his letter after the fact, and never suggested that he had changed his mind about its content. On 8 Iyar, he in fact issued a short note that he wrote in his own hand (generally someone else writes out his notes and he just signs them) saying that he had never changed his opinion on the matter. (See letter from 9 Iyar.)

We are also including a link to the originals of the most recent letters.
