Roshei Yeshivos Urge Parents to Safeguard Sons from Spiritual Perils

By Yechiel Sever

Following calls by gedolei Yisroel, including HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv and HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman shlita, roshei yeshivos are issuing appeals to parents to safeguard their sons and remain alert to various spiritual dangers that lurk during bein hazmanim, such as tainted communications devices, including Internet perils and self-styled "chareidi" websites. They also cautioned against unsupervised trips and renting rooms in the North.

In a notice headed, "Amoleinu Eilu Habonim," gedolei Yisroel warned about the perils and snares to be avoided during the Nisan yeshiva break.

"We have heard about the terrible breach in which bochurim from upstanding families rent rooms in hostels, hotels and cabins in the Tiberius area and the North, where they have access to impure devices and unconscionable things and [in certain instances] came to the point of terrible stumbling-blocks, may Hashem spare us. Yeshiva students rented rooms for rest and relaxation and were unable to overcome the test, and they stumbled and declined demonstrably.

"Parents must be alert to the dangers and exhibit foresight and stand guard, not allowing their sons to set out on trips. If there is a real necessity they should take part in organized trips with proper supervision to prevent spiritual and physical dangers."

The letter is signed by both HaRav Eliashiv and HaRav Shteinman shlita.
