MK Rabbi Gafni: 'Am Yisroel Cannot Exist Without Torah Study'
"The Jewish people cannot exist without Torah study. We survived all of the diasporas and were scattered around the globe. And those who sustained and continued to sustain the Jewish people were the Torah scholars," said MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni during a meeting of the Knesset subcommittee on draft deferments for full-time yeshiva and kollel students.
Several Sophisticated Sefer Torah Thefts
Several Sifrei Torah were stolen from small communities in the vicinity of Lod, including Achisomoch, Yagel, Achiezer, Nili and Mevo Choron. The thieves displayed a detailed knowledge of the way the shuls work and the sifrei Torah are stored.

Thousands of shattered mourners, led by rabbonim, gedolei Torah and admorim, took part in the heart-rending funeral for the Bernstein family z"l of Beitar Illit, whose lives were cut short in a nightmarish road accident on Thursday, before Shabbos Parshas Re'eih. The seven family members killed in the crash were R' Aryeh Leib Bernstein, 43, and his wife Soroh Rivkoh, 41; their four children, Malia Miriam Gottstein, 21, Yochonon, 16, Chonoh Heniyoh, 15, Mordechai Aharon, 9; and Mrs. Gottstein's two-year-old son, Mordechai Aharon.
