New School Year in Modi'in Illit

by L. S. Wasserman

About 3,000 young students are to be added to the rolls of the school system of Modi'in Illit (Kiryat Sefer). There are about 30,000 school-age children of a total population of close to 50,000. The need to grow the system by 10 percent creates a flurry of activity as the new year approaches.

Some 160 new classrooms are to be newly opened, 125 of them in permanent buildings and the rest in manufactured housing. This year, 2,150 children will enter 1st grade, leaving behind the 34 kindergartens of the Modi'in Illit school system. The special education part includes 43 classes, three of them newly added.

Some 800 children, boys and girls, completed elementary school. For the school year 5771 two new high schools for girls will join the existing five. Seven yeshiva ketanas for boys are opening in addition to 15 existing schools. There are also 11 yeshiva gedolahs in the city.
