Jerusalem: UTJ Signs Jerusalem Coalition Agreement

By G. Lazer and Yechiel Sever

UTJ signed a coalition agreement with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat that includes a pledge to uphold the religious status quo and the city's Jewish character, and to form a partnership in running the city and seeing to the needs of all its residents, including the educational and religious needs of Jerusalem's chareidi sector. The move and the subsequent decisions were made after consulting with gedolei Yisroel shlita.

"I'm hoping and praying for siyata deShmaya in working with my colleagues to meet the many needs of the chareidi sector in Jerusalem," said Rabbi Yitzchok Pindrus, Degel HaTorah's party leader in Jerusalem, after the signing of the agreement on Monday, "and to maintain the achievements the chareidi public has made in recent years, and to improve the educational facilities and the botei knesses from the condition some of them are in."

With eight councilmen, UTJ is the largest party on the city council and will receive eight portfolios and two committees, including Chareidi Education, City Beautification, as well as the Sanitation portfolio and the chairmanships of the Allotment Committee and the Planning Works Submission Committee. The party will also be given a deputy mayor right away and another deputy post following the reinstatement of the old law for the appointment of eight deputies in the Jerusalem Municipality rather than the current seven.
