Matzoh Exports Expected to Decrease

By M. Green

Economists at the Export Institute estimate matzoh exports will drop 5-10 percent in 2009 following a sharp rise in 2008 — a total of $12 million, representing a 31-percent increase over the previous year, says Export Institute Director Avi Chafetz.

According to the Institute's figures the leading importers in 2008 were the US with 59 percent of all matzoh exports ($7 million), Italy with 10 percent ($1.2 million), Britain with 5 percent ($621,000), France with 5 percent ($600,000), Belgium with 5 percent ($560,000), Canada with 3 percent ($390,000) and Australia with 3 percent ($345,000).

Chafetz said the increase in matzoh exports to the US in 2008 can be attributed to the fact export that agreements were closed before the economic crisis took hold. Much of the Jewish community in the US, which often spent Pesach at hotels, is expected to stay home this year.
