Nouriel Roubini: Israel Recovering from Crash

"Israel is leading the way out of the crisis," said Professor Nouriel Roubini, an economist at New York University who is credited with predicting the deep economic crisis that hit most of the world during the past year. Roubini, an Iranian Jew, is sometimes known as "Dr. Doom" for his gloomy predictions. Roubini recently met with Israel president Shimon Peres at a conference in Italy.

Almost every year, as the Yomim Noraim draw near, questionable dealers latch onto a way to rake in handsome profits: mitzvas tzitzis. Recently chareidi retail outlets have been offering ready-to-wear talleisim kettanim at ridiculously low prices. Sales reach a peak during this time of year as Jews try to sanctify themselves by fulfilling the mitzvah of tzitzis — considered equivalent to all 613 mitzvos — with a set of new tzitzis.


Rabbonim Say Sample Shatnez Testing Not Enough

Gedolei horo'oh are warning the public that shatnez has been found in numerous series of imported suits, many of which originate in China, Eastern Europe and Turkey, where wool and linen fibers are often found in combination. An expert told us that factories in these countries sometimes use remnants that they acquire and thus small amounts of clothing can have problems which would not show up if only a sample is tested.

President Zuma Calls on Jewish South Africans to Come Home

In a speech to ranking Jewish leaders South African President Jacob Zuma called on Jewish expatriates to return to the country, according to a JTA report. Commenting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict he said he supports the "two states for two people" plan to put an end to the occupation that began in 1967.
