MK Gafni: We Must Step Up the Campaign Against False Conversions

By Yechiel Sever

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni called on the public this week to step up the campaign against the false conversions industry in response to a call by Justice Minister Daniel Friedman to provide marriage and divorce solutions for those not considered Jewish according to halacha. "This is the task of a state that belongs to the family of nations," said Friedman.

The Justice Minister made his remarks during a meeting in Tel Aviv where he also called on the beis din system to relax conversion requirements for the hundreds of thousands of non-Jewish immigrants living in Israel, and attacked the decision by the Beis Din Godol in Jerusalem to invalidate a conversion signed by Rabbi Chaim Druckman, who heads the conversion court system.

"The Justice Minister's world view is well known," said MK Rabbi Gafni. "We firmly disagree with him on these matters." Rabbi Gafni noted that the Justice Minister should have been the one to attack the fictitious conversions performed by the rabbinical conversion courts, but instead he has come out against the beis din that uncovered the false conversion processes taking place.

"The Justice Minister does not understand the meaning of a Jewish state. There is no way to turn non-Jews into Jews except through conversion done according to halacha. We're already accustomed to seeing here in the State of Israel in all matters associated with Judaism that the ends justify the means. We must redouble our efforts to fight this, not allowing the walls of Judaism or Kerem Beis Yisroel to be breached," said Rabbi Gafni
