Proposal to Authorize Botei Din to Judge Monetary Cases

By Betzalel Kahn

The government approved in principle a draft of a government- sponsored bill vesting the rabbinical botei din with the authority to hear monetary cases with the consent of both parties, and to hand down decisions. The law has not yet been passed in the Ministerial Legislating Committee due to disputes among the ministers.

The proposal was placed on the agenda last week, but following a request by the Government Secretary and the Coalition Chairman, the Knesset vote was postponed pending the government's decision. But since the government has yet to approve the proposal due to the dispute in the Legislating Committee, Rabbi Gafni announced he would try to bring it for a direct vote in the Knesset without the approval of the government.
