US Philanthropists Helping Avreichim Buy Apartments in Public Housing

By Tzvi Sofer

Following the Kaan Beiti project in which the Constructing and Housing Ministry allowed public housing tenants purchase their apartments at discounts of up to 85 percent, chareidi philanthropists from the US have agreed to assist bnei Torah and kollel families living in these apartments and eligible to purchase them at special prices.

During his visit to the US, HaRav Yissochor Meir, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas HaNegev and Yeshivas Zorei'a, met with gedolei Torah and roshei yeshivos including HaRav Aharon Shechter, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Chaim Berlin, with philanthropists and with Rabbi Shmuel Bloom, executive vice president of Agudas Yisroel of America, in order to secure their assistance in starting yeshivas and kollelim in the Negev as part of efforts to make the spiritual desolation of Israel's southern towns and moshavim bloom.

Rabbi Moshe Leibovitz, who joined the trip to the US, met with a number of chareidi philanthropists, presenting them with his ideas on how to foster the Negev's spiritual development. He succeeded in locating philanthropists prepared to assist chareidi families interested in purchasing their housing-project apartments under the terms of the special Housing Ministry sale before it ends in the coming days.

US donors said they are prepared to make very substantial sums of money available for the purchase of the apartments — in certain cases up to 100 percent of the price of the apartment.

Tenants interested in purchasing their apartments are invited to fax contact information and relevant documents as soon as possible to Rabbi Moshe Leibovitz at 02-5888105.
