MK Rabbi Gafni Works to Extend Military Deferment for Yeshiva Students

By Betzalel Kahn

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni contacted Government Secretary Yisrael Maimon, urging him to accelerate the renewed approval of the law that provides military deferments for full-time yeshiva students.

Several years ago the military deferral law was re-legislated with a paragraph stipulating that the law would remain valid for five years and the Knesset would be authorized to grant extensions of up to five years each unless a deliberation is held in the Knesset no later than six months before the law is scheduled to expire.

With the current law scheduled to remain in effect for another seven months Rabbi Gafni is asking to have it renewed within the next few weeks. He also spoke with Minister Eli Yishai since a similar paragraph appears in the coalition agreement Shas signed with Kadima.
