OPINION & COMMENT

Our Relationship with the Satmar Approach

The passing of the Satmar Rov zt"l is certainly an appropriate occasion for reflection and clarification of our relationship to that large and very successful community.

Everything Depends on One's Starting Point
A Mussar Talk of the Mashgiach HaRav Yechezkel Levenstein zt'l, delivered Lag BaOmer 5702 (1942) in Shanghai.
Transcribed by his talmid, Rav Moshe Binyamin Bernstein zt"l

The gemora (Yevomos 62b) says: "R' Akiva had twelve thousand pairs of disciples." This implies that there were no individuals among them; thus the sages specifically use the word "pairs."

HOME & FAMILY

I Am Making Shabbos

I am making Shabbos, peeling apples for an apple crumble and some fruit salad. Separating the eggs for some ice-cream, browning the turkey roll for a succulently herby Friday night treat. Oh! I am making Shabbos, changing the medley of raw ingredients in my shopping basket into Shabbos worthy tastes.

The Cinderella of the Illnesses

Getting along in school is never an easy matter. Think back on it. There's the schoolwork, the teachers, the other children in your class, the other children in the classes above you. In fact, it's really a wonder that most children seem to fare so well in such a complex house of potentially divided interests. With that in mind, have a ponder about this scenario . . .

Additional Luach Information

On Tuesday night, the eve of 14 Nissan (Apr. 11) is the search for chometz - bedikas chometz, and the chometz is burnt the next morning, Erev Pesach, Wednesday, 14 Nissan (Apr. 12) until the end of the zman sreifas chometz. On erev Pesach the firstborn fast— Ta'anis Bechoros.

Yov Tov Pesach falls on Thursday, 15 Nissan (Apr. 14), in Eretz Yisroel, and on Thursday and Friday (Apr. 14-15) in Chutz Le'aretz. The days until Shevi'i Shel Pesach are Chol HaMo'ed.

From Mussaf of Yom Tov Pesach in Eretz Yisroel we say morid hatal in Shemoneh Esreih instead of vesen tal u-motor livrocho.

From Thursday night, Motzei Yom Tov Rishon Shel Pesach, we count sefiras ha'omer until Shavuos.

The seforim hakedoshim write to make a meal on the sixteenth of Nissan to remember the se'udas Esther that she made when Homon was hanged (Mishnah Berurah, 490:2 from the Mogen Avrohom).

Shevi'i Shel Pesach falls on Wednesday, 21 Nissan (April 19) and in Chutz Le'aretz also on Thursday, 22 Nissan (April 20) which is Yom Tov Sheini Shel Goliyos - Shmini Shel Pesach.

Many are accustomed to read Pirkei Ovos after Minchah of Shabbos, from Pesach until Rosh HaShanah.

Our minhag is not to pray Yom Kippur Koton and surely not to fast during the month of Nissan.
