MK Rabbi Gafni: Movement for Quality Government Battles Against Lomdei Torah

by Betzalel Kahn

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni is refusing to sign the Petition for the War Against Corruption sponsored by the Movement for Quality Government because the organization wages battle against lomdei Torah. Recently the director of the organization sent a letter to all MKs asking them to sign the petition against corruption. Rabbi Gafni responded with a letter noting he fully identifies with the goals of the war against corruption and throughout his years in office has worked hard against corruption, but wrote, "I cannot sign with your movement, which battles against lomdei Torah in Israel, which is my most cherished principle, along with many other fine individuals."

In his letter Rabbi Gafni added that he does not see the connection between the organization's goals and their struggle against lomdei Torah, "unless you have decided to take advantage of your important goals to advance political interests and the worldview of a portion of your movement's leaders."
