Polished Jews
By Rosally Saltsman

I bought some silver polish to polish my tarnished necklace. As I write everything down not to forget to do it, I entered polish jewelry on my list. Only I wrote it in shorthand so what came out was, "polish Jew." Then I noticed what I had written and thought, "Yeah, that, too."

We live in a very polluted atmosphere. Every day, we are tarnished by physical, emotional and spiritual impurities that taint our environment, our homes and our hearts. Shouldn't we every once in a while, remember that we are jewels in Hashem's crown and polish ourselves up a bit? I don't mean the usual work on ourselves and self control we try to exercise in our daily lives, I mean sitting ourselves down and shining ourselves up a bit so that we glow with the natural luster that is meant to shine forth from the precious metal that we are.

Each of us is a gem in her own right and we refract and reflect heavenly light with our unique and individual sparkle. Every now and then we need to give ourselves a bit of polish so that we are always displaying our inestimable value.
