The Real Geirei Tzedek

To The Editor:

Further to "The Immigrant Conversion Industry" (Tammuz 25), in order to save would-be proselytes from the ignominy of "insincere converts, . . . when the War of Gog and Magog comes, each of them will throw off the precepts and go on their way" (Avodah Zora 3), is reason enough to adhere to the Torah-true laws of conversion!

The lax conversion standards of today reminds one of the awesome mesirus nefesh of that rare and remarkable breed of "out-of-the-blue" heroic proselytes of previous eras, who converted to Judaism by dint of intellectual conviction and who underwent great tribulations and even martyrdom for their new emunah.

They are the real Gerei Tzedek amongst whose portion we pray in the 13th blessing of the Amidah for Hashem to place us,

Yours Sincerely,

Amnon Goldberg
