Changes and Improvements in Egged's Jerusalem Lines
by Betzalel Kahn

Egged's winter schedule for urban bus service in Jerusalem has now taken effect. Lines 1 and 2 to the Kosel HaMaarovi will run every day until 12:30 am. Most bus service ends between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 midnight.

"I will personally keep track of the level of demand, particularly on the Kotel lines," said Yossi Chachkes, director of Egged's Jerusalem operations. "If we see a need to extend service beyond the planned termination time, I will not hesitate to bring back the previous arrangement. Our goal is to provide passengers with efficient service suited to their needs."

Egged officials also said the 40 Alef mehadrin line to Kever Shmuel Hanovi allows passengers to stay at the gravesite for about one hour until the bus brings them back to the city. The change went into effect on Asoroh BeTeves.

Since Egged began operating the 40 Alef line a few weeks ago, many passengers have been taking advantage of it to visit Kever Shmuel Hanovi. In light of the demand, Egged decided to make certain schedule changes. On Sunday thru Thursday the bus departs from Rechov Strauss at 9:30 am and returns from Kever Shmuel Hanovi at 11:20 am. Another bus leaves at 1:00 p.m. and returns at 2:30. On Fridays a bus leaves Rechov Strauss at 9:30 am and returns at 11:30.

Line 40 Alef was launched in response to requests by public figures and numerous city residents who visit Kever Shmuel Hanovi frequently. From Rechov Strauss the line proceeds via Yechezkel, David and Bar Ilan Streets to Shderot Golda Meir and then onto Ramot Gimmel and Ramot Polin before heading to Kever Shmuel Hanovi via Rechov Shivat Tzion.
