Eight economics professors from the Hebrew University signed a letter suggesting that "nonworking people" should be "encouraged to migrate" out of Jerusalem. The professors criticized a general plan, known as the Safdie Plan, for new housing along the western approaches to Jerusalem, arguing that it will weaken the city.

It is now the month of Elul, and the Yomim Noraim are drawing near. Those days of judgment and forgiveness are designated for self-examination (cheshbon hanefesh). Introspection is required both at the individual and the community level: each individual must reflect and search his deeds. Simultaneously, every person must consider the state of the community: he or she should examine his milieu, the level of religious observance as a whole.

Party at a Crossroads

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's defeat in the Likud Convention two weeks ago came as no surprise. Before the party referendum on the disengagement plan he declared the results would be binding, and then went back on his word, but this time he announced in advance that the vote would not obligate him to adopt a certain course in the coalition negotiations. Instead he made clear he would do as he pleases -- for "the good of the nation" of course.

No. 238230, is searching for long-lost relatives who are descended from the Maggid of Dubno, Rabbi Jacob ben Zeev (Wolf) Kranz ztvk'l whose 200th Yahrtzeit occurs this year on 17th Teves (29th December).
