Vanunu and other Apostates

To the Editor:

The treason of atom-spy Mordechai Vanunu reminds one of how the 12th prayer of the Amidah against the tiny number of Jewish traitors in every generation is eternally relevant.

Even more unforgivable is Vanunu's apostasy to Christianity. Although the vast majority of Jews remained loyal to their faith over a millennia of threats, torture, inquisition, auto da fe, pogroms, cultural censorship, economic repression, and material blandishments, there has indeed been a steady trickle of apostates to Christianity.

Yours Truly,

Amnon Goldberg

The Editor Replies:

As HaRav Moshe Shapira once stressed, in referring to the twelfth brochoh of the Amidah (Hilchos Tefilloh 2:1), the Rambam says, ". . . and when he saw that this is the greatest of all the needs of man, [Rabbon Gamliel] and his beis din stood up and established this brochoh . . . "

May Hashem save us all from the efforts against us of all our enemies.
