Gedolei Torah Say that Study in Professional Training Institutes for Girls is Against the Ruach HaTorah
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Gedolei Yisroel, led by Maran HaRav Sholom Yosef Eliashiv, shlita, have spoken out recently about the need to raise awareness on the obligation to safeguard educational purity of bnos Yisroel by preventing parents and their daughters from being lured by institutions offering professional training for girls outside the Bais Yaakov framework such as Magen and other institutes for professional training.

Maranan verabonon oppose setting up a rabbinical committee to head these institutions because these institutions do not provide chinuch in the true sense, but merely serve to provide career training. This is something that ein ruach chachomim nochoh mimenu and therefore there it is not proper to give them any sort of rabbinical endorsement, whether direct or indirect. This is due to their essential nature and also due to the stumbling blocks they have caused. It is clear that the proper place for bnos Yisroel is only in Bais Yaakov schools.

Several times in recent years HaRav Eliashiv, shlita, has pointed out that parents' fundamental responsibility to their daughters is to bring them up and to educate them in a pure, uncompromising Torah spirit. Their responsibility is not limited to concern about their daughters acquiring a profession and parnossoh. The main objective of Bais Yaakov educational institutions which operate according to the guidance of gedolei Yisroel in recent generations, he says, is to impart yiras Shomayim and education al taharas hakodesh, while allowing girls to complete their studies in a manner that will allow them to earn a living in teaching and similar professions, all according to the pure daas Torah of gedolei Yisroel.

Setting up institutions for girls that serve as an alternative for girls in the years when they should be acquiring yiras Shomayim and a traditional Jewish education runs contrary to the spirit of Torah--particularly since these institutions do not provide a chinuch framework and have caused problems. Gedolei Yisroel maintain strongly that professional training should not be through studies towards a university degree and not with any ties, direct or indirect, to secular academic institutions.

Therefore, according to the ruling of maranan verabonon shlita led by HaRav Eliashiv shlita, no Rabbinical Committee will be set up to lead the "Magen" Institute for Professional Training and similar institutions, so that parents and the entire community should know that these institutions are not under rabbinical supervision. Yated Ne'eman has published this explanation at the behest of maranan verabonon shlita to increase public awareness of the matter.
