OPINION & COMMENT One time there was a fatal accident on Shabbos, and Maran the Brisker Rov zt"l remarked that Shabbos was collecting its debt. His talmidim asked: Aren't there traffic accidents all week? To which the Rov replied: There are many causes for traffic accidents. But when one happens on Shabbos, there is no need to search for the cause of that accident, for its cause is clear and evident to all. The Candle's Cry: Understanding the Message of the
Menorah "During the period of the Second Beis Hamikdosh the Greeks imposed decrees on the Jewish people in order to destroy their beliefs and stop them from learning Torah and practicing mitzvos . . . After the miraculous redemption, our Sages instituted that we should light candles for eight days by the doors of our houses in order to show and reveal the miracle." (Rambam, Hilchos Chanukah 3:1-3).
The Ancients -- Like Angels Each year we return to the weekly portion which tells us about the hatred the brothers bore unto Yosef and their inability to maintain normal speaking relations with him. These portions are difficult to understand. They are veiled and concealed with a thousand barriers that defy our ability to fathom what is really going on.
