Standing at Closed Gates

To The Editor:

Every Shabbos thousands arrive at the Kosel Maarovi, the remnant of our Beis Mikdosh, to pour out their hearts in prayer before Borei Olom. Of course we do not pass through metal detectors and this past Shabbos we were pressured to do so. We begged and pleaded! Shabbos Kodesh, an hour's walk, but to no avail.

I asked a rov and he said there is no heter to pass through a metal detector on Shabbos.

In the name of thousands of people I denounce this and shout, "Shabbos!" Do not force us to pass through metal detectors. Sometimes the shtreimel has fasteners, or a metallic object was forgotten in the pocket and the signal starts to sound, and this causes chilul Shabbos Kodesh. We are asking security personnel: Please, please do not force us to pass through metal detectors, and if someone appears suspicious, check him by hand.

Hoping nothing will change the blessings of Shabbos,

M.T.B.
