Query About Conversion

To the Editor:

I am a rav in England and I work in kiruv. I am in contact with an Israeli who was born in Rumania to a Jewish father. He was converted in Israel at Yemin Ord and has a stamp by the Rabbanut Yisrael on the Shtar Giyur. It doesn't seem glatt to us here so we wondered how to find out more.

This man seems like a good person, and has become involved with a frum Jewish woman. I would appreciate your guidance in this matter

Bekoved HaTorah

M. N.

The Editor Replies:

We contacted the Vaad HaRabbonim HaOlami LeInyonei Giyur, which is the proper address for such queries, and this was their reply. Since it may be of interest to others we are publishing it.

The beis din which functioned there (that you refer to) is part of Special Conversion Courts of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and according to the psak of 5744 of HaRav Shach, the Steipler, HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and ylct"a HaRav Eliashiv, a careful examination must be made in order to determine whether the conversion was halachically valid. Special attention should be paid to whether there was a complete and sincere acceptance of mitzvos at the time of the conversion.

For further assistance you can apply directly to the Vaad at Israel fax: 972 2 532 2047

It would be helpful if you fax them the certificate itself and any other documents that you have.
