Rabbi Gafni Attacks Barak for Delays on Draft Law
by Eliezer Rauchberger

Rabbi Moshe Gafni sharply attacked Prime Minister Ehud Barak for his decision to prevent the first reading in the Knesset of the temporary order for the deferral of the draft of yeshiva students.

In his attack, in which he labeled the prime minister "a liar," Rabbi Gafni said: "The prime minister has plunged the public system into an unprecedented ebb. He joined with Tommy Lapid in order to immortalize today's anti-democratic method. He teamed up with Sharon in order to stop Shas and with Shas in order to stop Sharon. On 14 Kislev, he informed the High Court that he wants to complete the legislation, and seeks an extension of three months.

"Less than 24 hours after notifying the High Court, he came here and sent the Justice Minister to prevent the 80 members of the Knesset who were supposed to support the law and sought to remand the law, threatening us that if we didn't agree to postponement of the vote, he would take back the entire law. What will Israeli youngsters say now? 'The Prime Minister is a liar!'"
