Protests Against Chilul Shabbos in Bnei Brak
by A. Cohen

On Shabbos afternoon 29 Adar, scores of avreichim from the Pardes Katz and Kiryat Herzog neighborhoods demonstrated outside of the Kishurit-Ma'aneh Iski offices on Yarkon Street in Bnei Brak, protesting the company's weekly Shabbos desecration.

The demonstration came in the wake of appeals by communal leaders to Michael Sherman, manager of Kishurit-Ma'aneh Iski, not to operate on Shabbos and yomim tovim.

Bnei Brak Deputy Mayor Rabbi Shmuel Levinger and Rabbi Shmuel Friedman of the Municipal Council recently informed Sherman of the severity in which the Municipality views this breach in the city's Shabbos. But despite numerous appeals, work has continued on Shabbos. City rabbonim have said that if the Shabbos desecration does not stop, thousands of Bnei Brak residents will demonstrate in front of the Kishurit offices. Bnei Brak's tens of thousands of residents will staunchly oppose attempts by various commercial ventures to undermine the Shabbos.

Local communal leaders have appealed to the chareidi Knesset members to take immediate measures to terminate all business connections between Kishurit- Ma'aneh Iski and government corporations until the company agrees to stop its Shabbos desecration.
