The Bubble Has Burst

Only a year since the American stock markets were at record highs, they have fallen hard and fast, back to the levels of almost two-and-a-half years ago. The NASDAQ stock average, until recently the leader with huge yearly gains, has so far lost some 60 percent of the value it had only so recently.

Honoring Others While Doing a Mitzvah
by A. Avrohom

"R' Akiva had twelve thousand pairs of talmidim from Geves until Antifras, and they all died in one period of time because they did not honor each other" (Yevomos 62b).

For Not Having Shown Respect for One Another
by HaRav Eliezer Lopian

We are taught that R' Akiva had twelve thousand pairs of disciples, from Gevas to Antiparas, all of whom died in one period because they did not show the proper respect for one another. The world was desolate and Torah was being forgotten, explains Rashi, until R' Akiva came to the Sages in the south and taught it to them: R' Meir, R' Yehuda and three others. They resurrected the Torah from near oblivion and reestablished it.

On Sheva Brochos Speeches
By Rabbi Yisroel Nulman

"A Man has Joy in the Answer of his Mouth; and a Word in Due Season, how good is it!" (Mishlei 15:23). Perhaps now when there are no weddings is a good time to reflect on the speeches we make at such simchas.

Politica
Afraid of Burg

by E. Rauchberger

Knesset chairman Avraham Burg has the heads of the Labor Party scared. According to all of the forecasts, Avraham Burg will win the primary elections scheduled to be held in another four months, making him the party's candidate for prime minister. This has all of the other candidates and those who see themselves as potential candidates--Haim Ramon, Shlomo Ben Ami and Binyamin Ben Eliezer-- understandably anxious, and keeps them awake at night.
