ZAKA Volunteers Attended to 189 Tragic Cases in the Jerusalem Region This Past Year

by Betzalel Kahn

The 66 volunteers of the Jerusalem branch of ZAKA, the Organization for the Identifying of Accident Victims, attended to over 189 cases of tragic, unnatural deaths and put in 9,288 hours of work during the past year. The Zaka unit is made up of chareidi volunteers who identify accident victims and collect the remains for burial.

These figures, from the annual report, summarize ZAKA's yearly activity. The report places special emphasis on the tremendous pain ZAKA's volunteers feel when encountering victims of traffic accidents, work accidents and terrorist attacks.

The report highly praised the members of the Civil Guard, the Criminal Identification Department of the Police Department and the Police Department in general, headed by Regional Commander, Yair Yitzchaki. "All these components," the report noted, "make all-out efforts to provide ZAKA with vital equipment and guidance. They are attentive to our special needs and generously extend their help."
